"Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale is currently working on a new bill that would probably roll back some of the changes brought in by the Common Sense Act, including the more relaxed rules around transportation."
May be too soon to cheer just yet? At least the Libs aren't bent over like Trump is to completely undo everything the previous administration has. Hopefully there'll be some common sense left in the Common Sense Act.
Edit: don't take me wrong, I'm glad to see this small win in the name of common sense being implemented. Cop once wouldn't let me drive cause he noticed my driver's lic had expired a few days earlier. It is very easy to not remember to renew it, as we can all relate. But being charged under the criminal code for an expired firearms lic is truly absurd.

They will send you a letter to renew several months before expiry and you will have to transfer your guns because its not processed in time. Happens a lot. Then you will get letters from them risking losing "YOUR" guns because they messed up.Joolz wrote:"Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale is currently working on a new bill that would probably roll back some of the changes brought in by the Common Sense Act, including the more relaxed rules around transportation."

I renewed a license in March, 2 weeks before my expiry in Aug I called them up because I didn't have my license yet. I ended up getting it a month after it expired.
Re: 6 months grace period for Gun Licence
Best way to renew is online. Take a selfie, fill in the form, email both, that's it. I had mine back in about a month. I always start 6 months before expiry, just to be safe.
Re: 6 months grace period for Gun Licence
Heh, wish the same was true for driver's lic. Had mine expire on two occasions. Likely to happen again in the future. But why should the gov bother spending money on a reminder when they can just fine those that forget to renew in time. If not mistaken the fine is over $200. Nice little cash cow.
Good to know you get a reminder for the Pal. Suppose those that don't get the reminder may be the ones that move and don't inform the RCs of their new addresses.

- You can own a car without having a valid license... You just can't drive it around.
While being in the possession of a firearm without a valid license is a criminal offense.

Same as the people with 5-6 DUI and no license.

Think you missed the point of the comment. But thanks for explaining that a car is not a firearm.sillymike wrote:Big difference between a driver's license and a PAL

Renewing a drivers license takes an hour. Pay the 80$ and get a new picture, vola good for 5 years. Renewing a firearm license takes months and months, a lot of useless paperwork. Cannot just walk up and get it renewed the same day. Sometimes they actually forget or lose the paperwork. Making you into a criminal overnight once it expires. government is great at that.Joolz wrote:Think you missed the point of the comment. When you renew in March, and you don't get your license till 2 - 3 weeks After it expired in Aug. That's BS. That's the purpose of this grace period. To make law abiding license people non criminals because government slow process times.
Re: 6 months grace period for Gun Licence
My 12/6 prohib. renewal took just over 5 months, due to ""They" are instructed to make prohibited renewals as laborious & dragged out as possible" - this from a RCMPolice S/SGT.
It is a good thing I applied 5 months ahead of my permit's expiry, however for 2 weeks I was in possession of a number of restricted and prohibited firearms for 2 weeks - without a license
to do so. I expected my doors to get kicked in any day, but that did not happen, however for those 2 weeks, I never left the house.
About the automatic conveyance. Goodale's response was straight BS - a lie - which is typical.

I would like to go into the CFO office and renew on the spot. That would be a nice option.Daryl wrote:My 12/6 prohib. renewal took just over 5 months, due to ""They" are instructed to make prohibited renewals as laborious & dragged out as possible" - this from a RCMPolice S/SGT.

Re: 6 months grace period for Gun Licence
I agree 100%. But the point I was trying to make is, there's no reason for the gov to not send you a reminder that your driver's license is about to expire. They send you yearly reminders letting you know your vehicle registration is about to expire. There are also grave consequences to driving with an expired license. For one your insurance is void. This could cause someone a world of grief and possibly ruin one's life financially in the event of an accident.leadslinger wrote:Renewing a drivers license takes an hour. The provincial gov knows this and still won't spend a few dollars sending you a reminder. Instead they seem to prefer raking in money from the fines law enforcement collects, as often they're the ones that find out your license has expired. Perhaps my initial post wasn't clear on this, so I hope this clarifies that.
But yeah, this pails in comparison to being made into a criminal should the same happen with a firearms license. Doesn't sound right when they know you've been following all the rules for the first 4 years and then puts you in the same category as someone that committed armed robbery, just because you missed a date. It's like the gov doesn't care whose lives they ruin.

Odd because I get a reminder that my drivers license to expire. Because I renewed it this year when I moved as well.Joolz wrote:I agree 100%. Not in AB, you don't. Which is a huge gripe of mine as I was caught twice with an expired DL. What would have cost under a buck to remind us about it instead turned into a few hundreds in fines. Thus my conclusion that this is a cash cow that the AB government is more than content to continue milking.leadslinger wrote:Odd because I get a reminder that my drivers license to expire.
