1322/2240 Upgrades

Hi,

I have looked on the this forum and a few others and haven't been able find a conclusive answer to the following. With a 1322 or 2240 would upgrading the barrel length to 18 inches and adding a steel breech push either of these guns over 495 and into RPAL territory? I will not be making any other mods to the internals to be safe. I'm interested in making a carbine and these seem like cheap and easy ways to learn how to disassemble and reassemble air guns as a first project.

I'm also going to order a Chrony if i go ahead with this project.

Be safe and get a chrony.

It would probably push it over 500 fps - but with the chrony you would know for sure.

You can adjust the hammer spring to bring it under 500 fps; in most cases.

Ill do a test this weekend for the name of science and sticky. Take a 2240, and chrony it between a 7.5, 14, and 18" using 14.3grn Crosman pellets. For sticky purpose so these questions can be YES or no.

Yes I have a RPAL, no I don't plan on keeping it this way. But seems these questions get asked a lot. When dealing with modding 22xx/13xx.

Ill run all 3 barrels on a stock, breech, then switch to a steel breech. Run all 3 barrels.

All I got is 13.8 grn pellets.

I'll play Devil's Advocate here.... .... To be 100% inside the law, in a .22 cal which you have modified by installing a longer barrel, you would have to make sure it is under 500 fps with the lightest pellets commercially available (which would still exceed 4.2 FPE).... Since the manufacturers rating no longer applies (because you changed the barrel), it could be tested that way by the Authorities.... My guess is that a 2240 or 1322 tested that way would be over 500 fps with an 18" barrel with the lightest ammo (~ 9 gr.)....

I'm just getting tired of the same old questions. So figure some testing to say 100% YES, for sticky purpose.

I got some promethus pellets ( I think 9grn ) ill be using to test. Maybe BC be much warmer than NS. Basement of my place is only 13 degrees and I'm getting some low readings. Just did testing of 2240 spring, 1377 spring and a disco spring with ether pellet and was low. Either my chrony is messed up or my gun. Because heavier spring than my 2240 gave me lower readings.

Might have to clean the screen, and throw in a new battery. Also keep my c02 upstairs where its warmer. Go back to testing, before PPC tonight.

I appreciate your caution Bob, and to be safe I'm sure you are correct. However, at least one of my guns (Qb78D) came from the factory as a sub 500fps gun and was shooting 495fps on co2 with 14.3gr, so either I got a hot one or when the RCMP tested the gun for approval they used 14.3gr pellets. (I've since converted it to a PAL rated gun). I guess it's up to each person to decide whether to trust the manufacturer or detune their gun for a lighter pellet. Maybe I'm sticking a target on myself for trouble, but I think I'll just stick with 14.3gr as my standard for testing these guns. My crosman 1322 was getting 460fps with 14.3gr, totally stock. Is it possible it will shoot the 9 gr over 500fps? I'm guessing it could be possible, but I'm not going to worry about it. That is just my opinion and I'll have to live with it if charged for it. Hopefully the RCMP would have some common sense and not criminally be charging most of the pellet gun owners in Canada for buying stock guns that shoot super light pellets over the limit. I'm assuming as long as I make a reasonable effort to stay under 500fps with 14.3gr pellets and am not going around doing criminal things I should have nothing to worry about. [emoji846]
Everyone else will have to decide for themselves. I guess another good measure is to never buy 9 gr pellets or never use them when hunting or target practicing, if there is any chance they are breaking the speed limit! I'm thinking most police officers are not going to bother searching online for some obscure 9gr pellets, and if they have any on hand it'll be some crosman hollow points.

No reason to worry about an UNMODIFIED non-PAL gun.... The manufacturer is the one that chooses the pellet weight, and the RCMP accept their data.... For example, I know of at least one Model of Diana in .177 that is factory rated non-PAL with a 10.3 gr. pellet at <500 fps, and so marked on the box.... It is only when we modify a non-PAL gun that we MAY have to be concerned about the RCMP using whatever they want to test it.... I agree that if you don't have any light pellets with you, or stored nearby, you could argue that what the gun does with something you don't have is moot.... Logic would agree, and we can hope prevail in that case....

.177 cal non-PAL guns with light pellets aren't a problem, of course, because if they are under 500 fps with a 7.5 gr. pellet they should be under 4.2 FPE with anything lighter.... and you have to be over BOTH for the gun to be PAL rated....
