Aluminum Tube from Home Depot - tensile strength?
Aluminum Tube from Home Depot - tensile strength?
Does anyone know exactly what alloy this would be?
This comprehensive list goes from 13-83 kpsi, I'm guessing the above would be a 6063 alloy on the lower end of the spectrum.

No way of knowing exactly what alloy, or the manufacturing method (welded, seamless, DOM, etc.).... A pretty safe bet is that it is NOT better than 6061-T6.... and as you say most likely a lower grade.... If you are thinking of using it for a pressure vessel, the only safe way would be to hydrotest a piece to destruction and then use about 1/4 of that for your MSWP (maximum safe working pressure)....

That would be my feeling. Are there any online retailers of stronger alloy tubes you would recommend?
This is for a 2240 HPA conversion I'm pondering, I guess fitting it snugly in the steel tube would make it safe but having something that would take the pressure independently would be preferable.

What's wrong with SS tube? Does it have to be aluminum?
I have some airguns.

Not sure what that refers to, not one of these I guess.leadslinger wrote:Making a gauge block?
Stainless would also be fine, I'm just more familiar with aluminum and brass. It's the first time I'm properly venturing beyond 1000 psi so open to suggestions. What's wrong with SS tube? Does it have to be aluminum?

Aircraft Spruce has a wide selection of Aluminum and CrMoly tubing....

Go for stainless or 4130, don't mess around. Flood cool it and don't let it overheat during machining either.

Fair enough.DerekVinyard wrote:Go for stainless or 4130, don't mess around.
Here's what I'm contemplating, big bore 2240 with a balanced valve:

Just switch the front fill adapter to a Discovery adapter or custom one and just use a foster with check to seal it up. Save some time on machining...

Yeah, threading the existing cap for a 1/8" NPT foster would definitely be more practical.DerekVinyard wrote:Just switch the front fill adapter to a Discovery adapter or custom one and just use a foster with check to seal it up. Save some time on machining...
Currently in Quebec.Where are you from?

Planning on a single shot per fill?.... Very small reservoir for a big bore...

Just looked at the drawing, missed that. Even in .177 your shots will be very limited, you need a tank. Even a long tube on a big pistol would not be much.

I calculated about 3 useful shots in the 450-350 fps range for a 3,000 psi fill.
I have a .357 barrel I want to put to good use, considering either the above with a short barrel and high pressure or something similar to what you had done here running in the 1,000 psi range with a regulated paintball bottle. That would make it a little unwieldy however scoped and fired from rest it should be pleasant to shoot.
