So, I tore apart a Telley..

#1 Post by Bbqznbeer »

A winter project I started...
It's an old Hungarian Telley Super ( .177 ) which I'm giving it a slight makeover / tune-up .
The piston seal is leather and badly worn.
Is there anyone who has replaced this seal before ...or...is the a replacement available ?

I have made a few leather seals myself, as well as other members here. I actually made one yesterday for a Slavia 618. Rather easy to do with metal home made dies, or wooden board and socket. Plenty of infos and pictures on the net. Basically you want to shape a flat piece of leather into a cup. You may or may not need to remove a rivet and drill and thread a hole to install the new seal. There are replacements available in the UK I think, but for the money, it's worth to try to make your own. Some links:

Here I made a new one for a FEG Marla, which is a Relum Telly clone:

Don't have many pics handy right now, but here are some to give you an idea:

If everything's so lovely yeah, then why don't I, why don't I, why don't I, why don't I feel lovely?

Very nice work on that seal.
Theory is when you know how something works, but it doesn't.
Practice is when something works, but you don't know why.
In my shop, Theory and Practice are combined!
Nothing works and I don't know why.

Two lathes and too many projects

Nice job - my Dad made a leather seal for my brother's little Salvia .177,- back in the 50's.

I don't know how he actually made it, but it was more powerful after the new one was installed,

than when brand new.
Best Wishes

Thx for the info guys ! :D
This is a project that I'll drop for a week or so then get back into it ...lol.

Mine has the rivet , which tapped out , easy enough , and it looks re-useable as well as the retainer ( mine is plastic ) . Forming the leather disc is next and I'm tending on slowly tapping it and the rivet / disc back in place , hopefully..using the boiled water method for forming.

Looking down the barrel the rifling was almost full of lead and had , literally , a smoothbore look to it.
After some extensive brushing the lead began to chip out ...I could see it breaking out in patches along it's length ...never seen that before...
I'm still in the process of clearing out the rifling but I need to get a new brush  and then get a good look at the crown .
I'm taking photos , along the way , and once done I'll post the project .
