Just got a Quest 500 the other day and would like to replace the plastic pivot shims with something more substantial. anyone done this? Would you use stainless steel, brass or bronze? Should the steel pivot bushing be slightly longer than the over all width of the breech block plus the shims, say .001"? How much clearence should there be between the overall breach block+shims and the inside of the reciever fork?
Any thoughts, experiences or advice greatly appreciated.

Help with Quest 500 barrel shims
Geoff, you made a great selection. It is one of the best deals in entry level springers IMHO.
Ratite has a Legacy tune site if you search that explains a lot.
I would say use it as is at first but in the effort to enhance your gun use brass. Now the plastic shims put some friction on the barrel breech when done up tight. So if I change mine I think I want a brass shim on the right side and a belleville washer on the left. Do not know yet if that is doable.
If possible you want to approach zero clearance and as you mentioned you are aware of the bushings purpose and length.
For interest sake could you measure your bushing wall at the thinnest and the thickest and let me know if you have a difference and how much?
I have a good pivot screw lock system figured if you are interested as well.
Walter....

Thanks Walter,
I like the idea of the brass shim on the right/ washer on the left. So you are saying that I should shoot for close to zero tolerance between bushing length and breach/shim overall width?
Would love to here your thoughts on the locking system too.
Decided to reasemble and shoot as is for now so I will get you the bushing measurements when I strip it down to do a piston swap
cheers

Geoff, stop stop stop!!!!!!!
You don't want no real piston in that baby!!!! cause then you will for sure love it
I did the conversion to mine and can't shoot it enough!
Find Ratite site yet?
There's a Quest fan on here with good tips as well on this gun.
You will want to do some stuff once you see how well it responds to tweaking.
Walter.....
BTW keep me posted if you can okay?
One thing I would like to find is a real metal rear sight to replace the plastic one. my only complaint.

What's Ratite ?:?
Yep, those sites really STINK but with my tired old eyes I kinda have to use a scope anyway. If you could find a decent enough set of iron sites from another gun it shouldn't be too hard to make an adapter plate though.
Will post updates as mods are made

Geoff
Update:
Have put about 1000 shots through this baby so far and it's really settling in nicely. I'm a lousy shot but I'm managing 3/4" groupings at 15 yds and am learning lots about hold sensitivity of springers
Walter: Strippped her down again to do a lube tune, which I will have to do again when I get the new piston.... oh well, but I measured the pivot bushing thickness and it does vary by .004" from .037"-.041". Could this be the reason my breach seal looks a bit more squashed at the top than at the bottom? How do I replace the breach seal, is it bonded/glued in or just pressed? I am going to machine some pivot spacers out of Delrin next week so I will let you know how that works out too.
Anyone ever tried Bel-Ray assembly lube (moly paste/grease)?
I am having way too much fun with this

Re:Help With Quest Barrel Shims ???
Hey Guy's,
This is an old post but, here goes anways. Check this guy out for custom Brass Shims for the Quest 500/800/1000. Replaces the Nylon ones that R Crap ! I don't know where some of the guy's are getting there info from, but ? The Quest Springs are different between the 500 and the 1000. The 1000 is 11.5" long, and the wire Dia. is: 0.120" and it has 37 coils. The 500 has only 30 coils.
