Picked up my first airgun
Picked up a PPK, man im hooked, think i found my next hobby. Replica air pistols.
The weird thing is that i find myself becoming more intrigued with the histories of these various air pistols more so than the actual plinking, for example PPK stands for Police Patrol Kriminal, this was the pistol carried by german police during WW2 and is also believed to have been the pistol used by Hitler to end his life... also used by james bond himself.
Next im looking at the Gamo P23 which is a replica of the SIG-Sauer P-230, Colt Govt, Berreta... The list goes on. What a great hobby.
Does anyone know the legalities of carrying in your pocket, transporting in a vehicle or being able to plink in the woods while camping etc., Is this legal?

I drive a jeep so don't have a trunk. These air guns are exempt from the specific safe storage, transportation and handling requirements set out in the regulations supporting the Firearms Act. However, the Criminal Code requires that reasonable precautions be taken to use, carry, handle, store, transport, and shipped them in a safe and secure manner.
I'm gonna have to buy a lockbox that'll fit a case for when i need to transport.
Thanks for your help.
Here's another link http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/C-46/42061.html for the Criminal Code.
I think airguns are classified as "Imitation Firearms", think i'll just leave em at home.

Thanks sniper
I've spent the last few hours reading section 3 of the Criminal Code and other than using the "Imitation Firearm" to commit a crime there really isn't much more that pertains to airguns (unless your airgun is deemed a replica ).
The only thing that bugs me is this:
The Criminal Code requires that reasonable precautions be taken to USE, CARRY, HANDLE, STORE, TRANSPORT, and SHIP in a safe and secure manner but nowhere does it set out guidelines as to what those reasonable precautions are, leaving it open to interpretation by the police and courts.
Outta sight outta mind is a good motto.

Say you're transporting an airgun inside of a case in your car and you get stopped, all the cop has to do is say that you're carrying / possesing for a purpose dangerous to the public peace or for the purpose of committing an offence and you'll get time.88. (1) Every person commits an offence who carries or possesses a weapon, an imitation of a weapon, a prohibited device or any ammunition or prohibited ammunition for a purpose dangerous to the public peace or for the purpose of committing an offence.
Punishment
(2) Every person who commits an offence under subsection (1)
(a) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years; or
(b) is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

I wouldn't recommend carrying the PPK in your pocket while walking around the city. Poeple might get the wrong idea.
Just put the pistol in some case, or the box, when transporting. No locks needed. Don't point it at cars when driving
If you are outside city limits then shooting might be okay. Check with bylaw offices if you are in a township. Anytime there are people around you are liable and you must be cautious of careless use.

My first airgun was a CPSport. When I was in college, my roommate and I both bought one from the local Canadian Tire. We had no transportation so we walked everywhere. Is was a small town so it didn't take long for us to walk outside of city limits to resonably safe areas to shoot.
We had our guns either in a backpack, or in our pockets, but when we had them with us we were as discreet as possible about it. We didn't draw attention to ourselves, and made a point of not needing to go into any stores or anything while we were on our way to or from our destination.
That's an example of why you would have an airgun on your person. I think that as long as you're smart about it, you shouldn't have any problems. HOWEVER, that was in a relatively small town - I would NOT want to walk around with an air pistol in my pocket in a place like downtown toronto. If I *HAD* to transport it on me in a larger city, I would probably have it in it in a box (preferably it's original box that said "... airgun ..." or locked in a case) in a backpack, and be very discreet and not go anywhere other than my destination.
As far as transporting an airrifle on my person.... I don't think I would even attempt it in in a large city.

Regardless of what type of airgun you have, or the legality, its always a good idea to transport your airguns in a gun case with a lock. If you're on foot, this is especially a good idea. If you're in a car, in the trunk, in a case. Don't have a trunk? You should consider getting a locking box bolted on to your vehicle. You never want to walk around in public with an airgun visible, or even worse, in a concealed carry position where someone may see it.
You're talking about getting into "replica" airguns, which is a real grey area in Canada. You want to be as discrete as possible.
Welcome to the hobby, and good luck.
