What's a realistic max range for a .177 Diana 24 detuned?

This is the place to talk about everything airgun related including air rifles, air pistols, pellet guns, pcp airguns and more.

What's a realistic max range for a .177 Diana 24 detuned?

#1 Post by DanInVancouver »

Curious about how far one can keep a group within 1-inch for this rifle. My limited yardspace has me shooting 25m max.

Any suggestions as to what pellet type/grain to use if I can push out further?

Hi Dan, welcome to the forum.
I don't think Diana24 .177 is detuned.
25m = 82 feet, I think it's more than enough distance for that little gun, if you're shooting indoor and want more distance and straighter trajectory perhaps you can use something like RWS Hobby .177, 7gr. or try Beeman wadcutter RED .177, 7.4gr.

where to buy beeman wadcutter red

where in Canada can I buy beeman wadcutter red. Or perhaps even the point head blue. Canadian Tire have the gold hollow point.

I think beeman listed them under silver bear series.

I think the Beeman RED is the same as H&N wadcutter, Todd would know this.
Some CT carry the RED but not all CT. I used to see them all three at BassPro but not anymore.

The H&N Finale Match "pistol" pellet is 7.6 to 7.7 grains. There are many other decent 7.7gr WC pellets such as RWS Meisterkugeln(blue tin), RWS R-10 lights, H&N Match Kugeln "pistol". The JSB Match "pistol" are 7.3 grains in weight.

Many, but not all, Beeman pellets are made by H&N. My web site has a partial conversion chart for many of Beeman's pellets.

I'm not 100% sure of the coated Beeman pellets, sold in department stores. Maybe try some of the H&N, RWS, and JSB wadcutter pellets to see what shoots best.

Your .177 Diana 24 should have fine accuracy for plinking shots out to 30 or 40 yards. Your rifle should be able to stay at an inch out to 30 yards, with the preferred pellet (tested). My .177 HW30S spit 8.4gr JSB Exacts at 600fps and that rifle would group an inch at around 35 yards (5 shot groups). The 30 yard groups were well under 1".

I would suggest trying a good domed pellet for long distance shooting (more aerodynamic). Many domed pellets shoot very accurately in field target competitions. Maybe try some JSB Exact(8.4gr), H&N Field & Target Trophy(8.6gr), and Crosman Premier Light(7.9gr).

They sell it here at Sirmail http://www.sirmailorder.ca/show_prod.ph ... f363176d22 . I've used those RED Beeman pellets before and they are pretty good. From what I remember Can. Tire discontinued and cleared out all the RED pellets in favor for the GOLD ones. I guess it's that "hollow point" look and persception they want to make people think that pellet is better but when the guns won't barely even make the pellet expand because they are all underpowered. If I remember correctly someone once told me that HP ammo expands best at minimum at 600 FPS and the faster the shot the better the expansion.

Tho I've gotten about 3-5% deformation (very /VERY/ minor expanding) in my guns before.

Those RED pellets are fun and very clear on the fingers.

I found some Beeman Red in a CTC in Quebec City the other day they were "red tagged" on sale for about $4.00 a tin. They shoot great in my Diana 48. Should have bought more than 1 tin.. :(

Hi Dan,

The "Beeman FTS" are made by H&N (Field&Target Trophy). You can get the H&N Field &Target Trophy in Canada from Illingworth Imports or Cibles.

Illingworth will make you a mixed sleeve of pellets if you ask. Maybe try a mix of some H&N FTT, H&N Hollowpoint, JSB Exact, JSB Match light, JSB Match heavy.

Don't forget to try the JSB Schak's, Illingworth's has them in 4.50mm and 4.49mm. They are about 8grs, wad cutter style, and most of my low-medium power rifles and pistol are very accurate with them. They are the main pellet I use in my CZ630 and Diana P5Mag.
But in my .177 Diana 24, the best over all pellets seems to be the Exacts 4.51 or 4.52. Enjoy that Diana,
