Well, I did it. Just ordered an HW30S from Illingworth. I don't really need it, and my wife won't be thrilled, but... what's a guy to do?
And because I just can't leave well enough alone, any recommended tricks and tips for when I receive this beauty? Can't imagine just buying something and not tinkering with it. Any springs or seals I should look for?
I can't believe I did it

Pellet head, you made the right decision ... congrats, wife don't need to know. Can you imgine if my wife would know how much my HW100 and Hill pump cost or how many airguns I have ....... SIGH !!!..... good thing for the side door entrance to my basement.....
Now all you need is the stock original spring for HW30 or JM and you're set to go.

These 2 links tell you what to get and how to go about installing it.
You wont be sorry!
You wont find the kit listed on their webpage, but just email them and ask for a tune kit for the HW30s/r7. They will put it together for you and let you know how much including shipping to Canada. Be prepared that it took about 2-3 weeks for the order to arrive by snail mail even though it was shipped in a couple of days.
Also I did my HW30s and my HW97k without a spring compressor. The 30 was easy the 97 was tough!

Pellet Head,
What do you mean, "I don't really need it and...". Of course you need it! If you didn't need it you wouldn't have ordered it! Just make sure you get your wife something nice for Xmas, she'll get over it. I have "not thrilled" my wife many times this year, and she still loves me.
What caliber did you order?

I don't know if it's "nerve" or just not that bright, but I sat looking at the order button on the website for more than 1/2 an hour before finally pushing it and ordering it. Immediately afterwards I was like "what have I done??".
My wife will definitely know about it because she will be home when it shows up so the nice gift for xmas thing is pretty much a given at this point.
I'm a hot button shopper. I get hot for something and then I fixate on it until I buy it.
Oh yeah, I ordered the .177 just to keep my stock of pellets the same. My kids think this is the best hobby ever. My Slavia is a little too long for my 10 and 8 year old. My 13 year old daughter is ok with it and a pretty good shot. My 10 year old daughter is pretty awesome with our Crosman 3576.

Re: I can't believe I did it
Of all the springers that I own, the firing cycle of the HW30S is the sweetest.pellet head wrote:Well, I did it. Just ordered an HW30S from Illingworth. I don't really need it, and my wife won't be thrilled, but... what's a guy to do?

Get a JM spring or stock spring if yours been handicapped.
You need to get rid of the distracting twang to experience it's amazing firing cycle.
Don't squish the sheet metal spring guide. It will not necessary get rid of the twang and will cause other problems. Tolerances are too tight in the HW30s for this method to work.
There is no point in machining a metal or plastic spring guide, the tolerances are too tight. There is about 0.035" gap between the piston latch rod and the spring ID. Pretty thin guides. This is why the manufacturer used a sheet metal spring guide.
Have no fear, heat shrink tube to the rescue. Rough up the spring guide with 60 grit sandpaper. Wipe the guide down with alcohol to remove any oil or grease. Go down to RONA or HD and get yourself some 5/8" or 3/4" dia. electrical heat shrink tube. Slip it on the guide shrink it on nice and even. Trim off excess, grease and reassemble. If you order a JM spring, be sure to order some moly and heavy tar. Lightly tar outside of the spring and lightly moly the metal portion of the piston.

I've done the realspring tune
I tuned a friends HW30 with the stck spring...moly here and there...shooting Shacks @ 675, grouping 3/4" at 25 yards...very nice...he is anxious to rid his home land of gophers...this should help...
If only I could have one more...
