This is the place to talk about everything airgun related including air rifles, air pistols, pellet guns, pcp airguns and more.

How do you tell if your gun is losing velocity?

#1 Post by link_dc »

Well ive only had my gun for like 3 weeks now, and i keep worrying that its losing velocity, i dont think ive ever dry fired it, and i just wanna know that its fine, but i dont know! its soo anoyying! i think there is somthing wrong with my head. is there some kind of noise it would make if the spring is broken or somthing?

Get a chrono and chrono it, find out the velocity and match it up with the spec. If it's like 100 fps below the spec with a light pellet then you know you're loosing power. If you don't have chrono you can use phone book to measure how deep (how many pages) the pellet goes in.

how do i compare the phonebook test to factory specs? and do repair shops have chronos? like ones they could just check your gun out with to make sure the velocity isnt lowering, like ones you dont have to buy?

just as a note 8 out of 10 times that a spring breaks the rifle or pistol in springers the gun wont cock all the way,,as for losing fps what gun are we talking about here, also brand new guns will vary alot in velocity untill the gun is broken in. it can take from 300 to 1000 rounds or more depending on the gun before every thing is broken in and settled../...the same rule of break in time applys to all types of power plants in airguns weather it be springer or CO2 or pump and even PCP

I'd say the phone book test is the best one. First soak it in water then shoot it from your desired distance. You said you have only had your 500x for 3 weeks. It can't lose velocity that fast unless you are shooting it like 24/7. If you are afraid that it is losing velocity than let it sit for a few days so the spring can re-cooperate. When I say a few days I mean like 2 or 3 that should give it enough time. Just remember oil your airgun about every 1000 shots and it should last a long time. I used to be paranoid about my break barrel losing power but then I got over it. As long as it is still killing a squirrel out to 30 yards it's good enough for me.

if it does lose velocity would be really noticable? so it goes through one side of a whipping cream container and doesnt dent the other, so if it doesnt go through one side of a whipping cream container then its losing velocity?

Exactly! If you test it for penetration and then later the same test( same pellet ,distance, target material, weather if your picky) results in less penetration then you are losing power. The wet phone book would be pretty consistant and you can count each page instead of guessing if the dent in the can is bigger. Maybe someone in your area has a chrony. Are there any shooting clubs around your area?

uuuhhhhhhhhhhh.........well............ the pellet dribbles out the end of the barrel and hits the floor..............then it rolls across the floor and hits a bit of string thats hanging down off the target..........which nudges the string which causes the cat to take notice and swat the string...... the string pulls down the table cloth which causes the table clock to fall off the table.......which hits the broom and the handle flies up and smacks the dish on the shelf that rolls along the shelf and drops off to hit the cat's tail which causes the cat to scream and scare the litter out of the wife who swings around with the dust mop which intersects with the candle on the shelf which flies up and hits the target which drops just as was intended.

Apparently you don't have any problem with velocity.
