Scope on a spring gun?

#1 Post by ABshooter »

I was just thinking: will the constant jarring of a break barrel going off cause a scope on it to shift around?

Hey, don't hate. It releases negative energy, which is bad for everyone.

i dont think there would be, because when you put a scope on, its REALLY on there, so i dont think you have to worry about that.

Certain scopes aren't compatible with break barrels. As you said the constant jarring of the gun can set them off. Also break barrel air rifles have a special re-coil that also sets them off. So the proper scope is recommened for good performance. Good scopes are Tasco and Bushnell. Tasco in my opinion being a little better. BSA also makes good scopes.

I use a crosman air rifle scope...I may be wrong but Im hoping that if a scope specifically says "air rifle" I take it that, that particular scope is designed for air rifles and their specific characteristics ie: spring recoil etc.

Some air rifle scopes are ok but some are just a piece of junk. Most dinky air rifle scopes wont stand up to the recoil of a spring air rifle. So I always use a .22 rilfe scope. I haven't had one fail me yet.

I got two Crosman 4x32 ,one Beeman 4x32, one Tasco AG4x20
on different break barrels all under 500 fps and i never had any problem with them.
By the way the one that came installed on my Beeman 1040 was right on at 10 meters right out of the box.

Scope drift

#7 Post by canshooter »

I have a Chinese 4x32AO scope on my Wiehrauch HW30s. This is not a particularly powerful springer and yet without scope stops I am constantly repositioning the scope forward. Even after a dozen shots or so the mounts creep back 1/4 to 1/2 inch. On my HW97k I have a one piece mount with a scope stop. It never drifts at all. I have seen pictures of a scope stop hole on an rws54 that had elongated all the way to the back of the barrel. some of the really powerful guns like the Webley Patriot are really demanding on scopes. I have read that a regular rifle scopes internals are only braced for uni-directional recoil and the bi-directional recoil of a powerful springer can tear them to pieces internally.
Airgunning is my hobby... and it is cheaper than
maintaining an outside relationship with another woman.

When I picked up a Diana 48 I installed a Crosman 4x32 scope on it , and saw that after shooting a couple of shots the scope slid back . So what I did was, I drilled a hole thru the bottom of the rear scope mount ,tapped it for a set screw ( 8-32), reintalled the ring ,screwed in the set screw so it rested in the rear hole on the D48 scope rail , installed the scope and have been shooting since . So far it's working , the scope is not moving don't know how long it will stand up to beating it gets from the D48...

has anyone ever had a scope that had the crosshairs snap ? this would be the only thing i would worry about for a springer . but ive never seen it happen . if the scope slides it should not make a big diff' .if it does, lock it in the end of the dovetail .

Bob,

I am amazed that your 48 hasn't eaten that Crosman scope, I bought the 4x32 to put on a low powered springer and right on the box it said;"Not Recomended For the 495 Springmaster". I ended up putting it on a Diana 24 .22 and had no problems, so I think Crosman was just covering there assets with the warning.
If that scope should fail, please let me now how long it lasted? Thanks,

I must admit that I don't shoot the 48 all the time ,I shoot the QB a lot more !!!Actually this morning I'm using the D48 to test a silent pellet trap, using duct seal in the rear to catch the pellets. It's amazing how much more penetration I get with the 48 (.177) compared to the QB (.22) I realize of course the difference in speed betweed the 2 . Anyway as mentioned the scope is standing up the beating the 48 is dishing out....so far

Their may be an other reason why it is not recommended on a 795.
My 795 has no scope rail & no way to put a scope on that thing .
